Mississippi University for Women made available full-tuition scholarships to all future graduating MSMS students at Aug. 12’s opening convocation.
After a speech from MSMS alumna Madison Echols, a sophomore at Harvard University, MUW General Counsel Karen Clay announced the university would offer the Power of Six Scholarship to MSMS students upon admission to MUW, a universal and perpetual offer.
Echols said she knows MSMS students have big futures ahead of them.
“Trust yourself and know your ‘why’ in everything you do so you don’t live in regret,” Echols said. “Feel free to reach out to me, your seniors and alumni.”
The scholarship’s name was inspired by six women who were a part of the original MSMS faculty, all of whom were also MUW alumnae: Linda Bridges, Kathy Cadden, Mary Davidson, Nancy MacNeill, Judy Morris and Helen Perry.
MSMS Executive Director Ginger Tedder said MUW’s offer is a great educational opportunity.
“This ongoing investment in Mississippi’s brightest students will create lasting positive impacts across the state. We hope this initiative encourages parents to not only consider MSMS for an exceptional high school education but also see it as a pathway to guaranteed debt-free post-secondary opportunities,” Tedder said in a statement to The Meridian Star.
Tedder said students should be confident in their skills and excited about the new environment MSMS offers.
“[Students should] never forget that [they] are enough for any challenge that comes [their] way,” Tedder said. “Just take it one step at a time.”
