Grace Ann Courtney and Yash Malhotra, both MSMS class of 2025, were recently elected lieutenant governors of Girls/Boys State. The American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs for high school juniors that focus on exploring the mechanics of American government and politics.

Arts, humanities flourish at MSMS
Over the past year, not only did the music scene’s most prominent figures gift fans with timeless additions to their discographies, but new artists also rose across genres, including jazz-classical, multi-hyphenate Laufey and the Midwest princess, Chappell Roan. Their artistry and natural talent as performers set them apart from many, so it’s refreshing to see them finally receive their flowers.

Junior Anya Klein falls asleep at her desk while completing homework for classes. Upon arrival at MSMS, students welcome an abundance of change into their lives, but one change students don’t typically anticipate is the deterioration of their sleep quality. Students’ sleep health is not adequately being supported and encouraged at MSMS, and sleep quality declines at MSMS primarily due to academic and residential factors.

The term gifted has been used to describe high-achieving for decades. After collecting data and testimonials from students at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science — a school that values academic achievements a little more than average high schools — its clear being called gifted affects some students more than others, but, as a whole, the term is used to ignore learning disabilities and bring high standards upon that same group of students.

Grace Ann Courtney is a junior from Wiggins. She enjoys playing piano, painting, drawing and listening to all kinds of music, specifically folk and alternative rock. Grace Ann prefers dogs over cats (except for her ginger cat, George, who is a perfect angel all the time) and watches "Glee" unironically. She hopes to pair her interests in art and life science to become a maxillofacial and oral surgeon.
