MSMS soccer began its 2023-2024 campaign with mixed results in home scrimmages against Grenada High School on Oct. 30, with the Frazer team winning 4-2 and the Goen team losing 7-0 at the Columbus Soccer Fields.

Frazer co-captain Sebastian Harvey said he was really impressed with the team as a whole.

“I thought the energy levels were high and fitness was at a better place than I expected,” Harvey, a senior forward, said. “Ethan [Liao] and I wanted to try a new tactic, and it played out very well considering the amount of new and inexperienced players we’re embedding into the team.”

During the Frazer game, Harvey and Liao scored a goal each, and junior Ngoh Mobit scored the third with an assist from senior Mehar Gill. The fourth was an own goal by Grenada.

Even though the Goen team lost, co-captain Ella Jones said the first game already proved to be a big improvement from practice scrimmages.

“We are feeling good about the season from this first game,” Jones, a senior defender, said. “As far as new juniors go, I’m overall really impressed with how far they have come and made an effort.”

MSMS faces Vardaman next at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 at the Columbus Soccer Fields.
