After three months of training and competing, the Frazer cross-country team qualified for the state championship after strong individual performances at the Oct. 24 MHSAA Regional Championships hosted at Eupora High School.
The Frazer team co-captain Gavin Weinstein ran a time of 18:25.76, placing second, while senior Dylan Wiley followed close behind him with a time of 18:49.37, placing fourth.
Weinstein said this meet demonstrated how the team’s skills and endurance have grown since the first meet of the season at Eupora High School.
“It’s really cool to start and end in the same place, and everyone’s times improved,” Weinstein said. “Eupora was our first meet, [and] it was pretty rough for everyone, so coming back when people could run better times was really cool to see.”
Wiley said he wasn’t as confident in this race as he would typically be because he was “exhausted and trying not to die.” Regardless, he said he stepped up for his team and performed well.
“The work, effort and passion we put into this season was too essential for me to not give this race 100%,” Wiley said. “I am just as proud of the team as I was when we began training in August. We’re regional champions now, which means when we come to state, we’re coming to win. The momentum is still strong; the team is even stronger. I am really proud of the team as a whole. Our progress is a result of our dedication, determination and commitment toward the sport.”
MSMS competes today [Nov. 2] in the MHSAA State Cross-Country Championships held in Clinton.
