Student Spotlight: Connor McNamee
December 7, 2015
Connor McNamee is known as a highly active member of the MSMS community. Not only is he the president of the Interfaith Dialogue Society Club, but he is also the treasurer for Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) and an alto saxophone player in the MSMS Blue Notes.
McNamee said, “I wanted to use Interfaith as a platform to make sure that people have a more tolerant attitude towards all faiths to encourage discussion between faiths.”
On his position in GSA, McNamee said, “I wanted to be treasurer of GSA because it means a lot to me and I have experience fundraising money.”
Finally, he said “Sights and Sounds is a fantastic opportunity for me to explore the history of our state through one of my favorite things: music. It also provides a bonding opportunity for me and my friends in addition to letting me perform in front of a crowd.”
McNamee grew up in the Jackson/Hinds County area and attended Hillcrest Christian School. Frustrated with the lack of advanced academics and diversity at his school, he decided to come to MSMS. He said he likes MSMS because “It’s like a really diverse group of people that’s so far away from the cookie cutter people at Hillcrest; it’s helping me for the future because I’m not just dealing with the same type of people who are at a central Mississippi Christian school.”
He plans on majoring in biology with a focus in microbiology and hopes to attend either Duke University in North Carolina or Tulane University in Louisiana.
Another fact McNamee would like people to know is that his last name is pronounced “Mac-Nuh-Me.”
In his downtime, he likes to listen to music or watch TV. His favorite TV show is The Golden Girls, and his favorite musical artists are Tove Lo and Years and Years.
