Three step teams from across the state gathered in MUW’s Nissan Auditorium for a step show. For the Saturday, Sept. 14 event, the Blu Knights and Blu Diamondz joined to form the MSMS Blue Waves Step Team. Other competitors included G Phy G (Glorify God) and Girlz to Pearlz.

Dressed in neon and covered with glow-sticks, The MSMS Blue Waves Step Team put on a show with a pre-school themed storyline featuring theme songs from both Disney’s “Little Einsteins” and Nickelodeon’s “The Backyardigans,” as well as Laffy Taffyby D4L. The playful feel of these songs and their performance mimicked the vibrant energy one felt throughout the whole event.

With the lights dimmed and strobe lights flashing, there were frequent dance breaks during which step teams would line the aisles, often circling the auditorium, freestyling a stroll to an upbeat song, such as Lil Boosie’s Wipe Me Down or Juvenile’s Back That Thang Up,” of the DJ’s choosing.

This year’s sponsor for the MSMS Blue Waves Step Team is Goen Hall Director LaToya Bledsoe.

I truly thought it was one of the best I’d seen in a while in terms of our students,” Bledsoe said.  “They worked hard to prepare. To see two student organizations come together the way they did in preparation for the show is beyond amazing. I couldn’t be more proud of the way our students represented their school along with the two organizations.”

This show marks the first time in several years the two teams have come together for a performance.

The Blue Waves Step Team placed 2nd.

“I personally love the fact that we came together to do a show together,” Anthony said. “It’s been years since we actually did something together. I’m very proud. I’m looking forward to more step shows, specifically because I’m president and it’s senior year.”

The captain of the Blue Knights, Cameron Thomas, voiced similar praise.

“In such a short notice, I honestly did not think we would be able to put it together, but with a lot of creativity, time commitment and teamwork, we were able to come together as one team and create something that everyone could enjoy,” Thomas said. “Even though I am happy that we’ve taken home the first step trophy since 2017, I think my favorite part of the experience was bonding with my classmates and sharing a unique aspect of MSMS with the community.”

Beaming, The MSMS Blue Waves Step Team went on to take 2nd place while G Phy G won 1st, and Girlz to Pearlz took home 3rd.

Everyone won, though, according to Bledsoe.

“To witness an environment where our young people could enjoy themselves, supporting one another, and being cheerleaders for each other with nothing but positive vibes speaks volumes,” she said. “There were three winners tonight, in my opinion.”

The team is looking forward to a more active year, hosting service programs, and continuing to represent and exercise the MSMS’ creativity and community ideals.
