When we all fall asleep, we dream of Billie Eilish
September 19, 2019
Billie Eilish, one of the hottest teen pop singers, has dropped another music video for her 2019 album, “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” On Sept. 4, Eilish released a music video for the song, “all the good girls go to hell.”
The music video starts off with familiar images from her previous music video, “bury a friend.” Her shirt is being ripped from the back and numerous syringes are being stuck into her back. The rising action of the video begins as wings begin to sprout from her back shoulder blades. Ouch? I know, right?
A sudden change in scenery and we soon see Eilish falling from the clouds. She falls at great speed until she lands at the bottom, which happens to be a pit of tar, and struggles to fight her way out. Finally, the beginning of the song starts.
The rest of the video consists of Eilish walking down a dirt path that soon starts to light on fire. The white wings shown earlier in the video are now black, leaving trails of tar behind the teen as she walks. The fire that surrounded Eilish trails up the tar and onto her wings. Her wings catch fire and transform into what appears to be bat wings. Eilish approaches the camera, and we are met with her eyes that replicate a black abyss. The song ends with a riff and Eilish walking away from the camera.
Eilish is known for her film-like and somewhat questionable music videos, and this one isn’t far from her usual work. She’s very cinematic and always adds more to her music videos than the average teen. In the video, Eilish makes shadows of strippers dancing as she walks down the dirt road. This could represent good girls who have gone bad, but at the same time, it could’ve just been Eilish satisfying her own desire for making things different from others. Eilish makes it known that she prefers to be her own person. She expresses those motions through one of her older songs, “COPYCAT.”
She is also known for her personal lyrics. She mentions in interviews about going through heavy things from fame, but this video is said to be focused on the environment. In the first and second verse, Eilish makes lines such as “You know I’m not your friend without some greenery,” and “Peter’s on vacation, an open invitation.” This may be a nod at people who take it upon themselves to throw things in the ocean when they go on vacation. She mentions the greenery in the perspective of someone who is taking the environment into consideration and is saying, “Hey! Stop killing the Earth.”
I look forward to Eilish’s future promotions for “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” Eilish has taken the world by storm and continues to share her love for music and what she creates with it, one day at a time.
