Queen Lover and Queen, Herself: Madison Wypyski
September 3, 2018
Madison Wypyski, a senior at MSMS, hails from the coast of Mississippi. She has been a proud member, and now captain, of both the Lady Waves soccer team and cross country team since her junior year. But, Wypyski is more than just a soccer player and runner. When she is off the field and track, you can find her immersed in a variety of clubs and activities.
“I’m in SEAL. I’m in Interfaith Dialogue, Catholic Club, Fashion Board…Wags and Whiskers, Forgotten Stories, Chem Club, I think that’s it, yeah that sounds like enough I’ll stop there,” Wypyski said.
With all of these commitments, it’s reasonable to think she wouldn’t have time to take a breath of air, yet she says all of these commitments help her have better time management skills.
“One thing that’s nice about the sports is you know from a certain time, so say 4:30 to 6, that you’re going to have to commit to being at practice or a game… it kind of helps you kind of structure your schedule because you know either before or after practice you need to set aside a certain amount of time to do homework,” Wypyski said.
She also elaborates on those times where her schedule is stricter, and she has to be more disciplined.
“Only because [having a sport] kind of forces me into keeping a very strict schedule and making sure I’m on task. I don’t really have that luxury of ‘Ooh, this YouTube video looks really good.’ Even though I have to admit sometimes I fall into that trap,” she says. “I think the sports and the clubs kind of help you balance it because it reminds you that you need to be focusing on academics as well as getting in that social time and committing time to social clubs.”
Being in the atmosphere of MSMS, it’s easy to want to focus on just school work because of the rigor of the classroom, but Wypyski is taking advantage of every opportunity offered here at MSMS. She is more than just an exemplary athlete; she’s an exemplary student as well.
Before coming to MSMS she was a student at Our Lady Academy where she played an array of different sports such as volleyball, golf and tennis. Even with so much experience in a variety of sports under her belt, Wypyski is still eager to learn more.
“My mom is from the Northeast, and she played field hockey growing up…I watch Teen Wolf, so lacrosse also sounds really cool.”
Wypyski’s time management skills and desire to learn about different sports, it has helped her grow as an individual.
“Honestly, whether you have a leadership position or not, in a sport it always kind of gives you an opportunity to help others with improving their technique and also kind of growing yourself and being able to look at how others do things and kind of expand your mindset in that capacity,” Wypiski says.
