This past weekend, the past and present of MSMS came together to celebrate alumni and also provide the current students with potential for a brighter future as well. Alumni Weekend is a collaboration between the school and the MSMS Foundation, where alums are invited to attend, but each year we celebrate those classes that are in reunion years – 5-year reunion, 10-year reunion and so on. This celebration is intended to not only allow former students to observe how the school has evolved but to allow current students to use this alums for both future contacts and models for their own lives.

“Alumni Weekend is a meaningful opportunity for our alums to visit campus, re-engage with MSMS, interact with current students, and remember what they gained from their time here. For school administrators, it is beneficial to hear from alums who are 5, 10 or 20 years out from MSMS and hear their perspective on how MSMS shaped their lives and career paths,” said MSMS Coordinator for Public Relations, Julia Morrison.

Prior to beginning of Alumni Weekend, there was a registration period that was manned by current students, where they aided faculty in signing in alumni. Keely Brewer, one of the helpers at the site, was very thankful for the opportunity.

“I had the job of greeting all the alumni coming back to campus. It was really interesting to see the past alumni, and it changed my viewpoint on what it means to be a senior. It was really cool because I realized that I would be part of this group in a month. Once I graduate, I’ll become another alumna of this amazing place, and I’ll return for events just like these. To me, that’s just crazy,” Brewer said.

There were multiple events planned out for Alumni Weekend, which included visits to observe the Tales from the Crypt Performance in Friendship Cemetery, Reunion Luncheon, Alumni Trivia face-offs, and an Escape Room event hosted by current MSMS students in Goen.

The Escape Room event was built by a team from Engineering Club, with Daniel Smothers and Leah Pettit overseeing the project. Vivienne Tenev was in charge of the story, while Lauren Mitchell and Loveish Sarolia led the build team and puzzle team respectively.

Daniel Smothers, MSMS Engineering Club President, was extremely impressed and happy with the success of the project and hopes more might be in store for the future.

“I thought that the event went really well, I have heard many great things from the alumni about the experience, and many of them continued to talk about the event that evening at their dinner. I hope to see things continue in the future like this, maybe even other clubs do similar things. But it will all depend on the leaders in the future,” Smothers said.
