As the date for the National Spanish Exam looms on the horizon for Spanish students, various methods of preparation are being incorporated, including competition.

The Spanish Club along with the National Spanish Honor Society held a Spanish Bowl on Sunday afternoon in Hooper Spanish classroom for anyone who knew the language or was currently in the class.

Although not mandatory, the Spanish Bowl presented the Spanish enthusiasts with an entertaining option of study and numerous students took advantage of this opportunity to show off their language skills.

Mariana Strawn, one of the Spanish Bowl organizers, described the event and its purpose.

“The Spanish Bowl was for anyone who knew Spanish and was currently in Spanish. It was created by the Spanish Club and the National Spanish Honor Society for the national Spanish exam. It was essentially like a test in that we had buzzers and then we had organizers reading questions for those two teams. I really think that it was good preparation for students who are about to take the national exam because it was great Spanish practice and formatted similar to the test,” Strawn said.

With five teams competing neck-and-neck, the continuous sounds of buzzers proved the level of knowledge that students obtain from their Spanish classes and their love of the language. After a final round, the emerging victors were Vivienne Tenev, Carey Williams, Myles Spillers, and Kamal Bhalla, with a close second place going to Jim Zhang and Baili Zhong.

These grand winners were awarded a gift certificate for a dinner for four at the local Mexican Kitchen for first place and special pineapple bowls created by the Spanish Club for second place. The Spanish Bowl turned out to be a productive way to spend a Sunday afternoon, brushing up on some Spanish.
