On a dreary Saturday morning, the MSMS Blue Waves and Lady Waves faced off against the Philadelphia Tornadoes. Despite the rainy weather, both soccer teams managed to pull through and nab big wins against the Tornadoes.

First up were the Lady Waves, who kicked off their game at 10 a.m to avoid the worst of the weather. The team played strong defense in the first half while senior McKenzie Jones managed to score two goals against the opposing side.

Their defensive streak continued in the second half, with the Philadelphia Tornadoes failing to find the goal.

Offensively, seniors Emmie Waits, Laurel Yarborough, and Britney Casmus and juniors Stephanie Fuller and Gabbie Kennedy each scored a goal against the Tornadoes for a final score of 7-0.

Both team captains as well as coach Chuck Yarborough attribute this success to improved communications between the teammates.

“We’ve learned how to possess a ball, we’ve got better team chemistry, and we’re getting to know how to anticipate each other’s’ plays better,” said team captain Hannah Houston.

“Communication helps with connecting passes which result in goals,” added fellow captain, Darby Meadows.

Following the Lady Waves were the Blue Waves who found similar success.

Even though the rain had picked up, the Blue Waves still put up a strong game with senior Noah McKone scoring  hat trick with two goals in the first half and a third in the second. Following this, senior John Howell and juniors Daniel Leetran and David Thaggard added three additional points for a final score of 6-0.

“We did well hustling and beating the other team to the ball. However, we need to work on coming together as one cohesive group and not just playing one person at a time,” said Blue Waves captain Noah McKone.

Overall, both teams managed to put their best foot forward and succeeded in taking down the Tornadoes.
